In San Luis Obispo County we are accustomed to some of the best air quality in the state.  Due to the recent fires in Southern California, we are experiencing high levels of smoke, ash and fire debris.  How does this affect you?   Your horse may show a decreased tolerance for exercise due to the particles that can accumulate in the lungs.  It can take up to 3 weeks to clear these particles from your companion’s lungs.  Consider decreasing the intensity of your riding routine to ease the stress on your horse until the air quality returns to normal.  Also, if your horse has a predisposition to respiratory illness, this air quality change may complicate it further.

Another consideration with the fires…Do you have a fire evacuation plan in place?  NO time like the present to be sure you are prepared in the event of a disaster.  Contact the wonderful members of HEET to help you with a plan in case of emergency.

Barbaro 2003-2007

There have been several funds to raise money to fund research regarding laminitis that honor Barbaro.  Additionally the NTRA is selling bracelets similiar to Lance Armstrong's LIVESTRONG bracelets, that say Riding With Barbaro to support research in laminitis.  Here are several links to the Riding with Barbaro Fund and the University of Pennsylvania's Barbaro Fund.
